THE ALPHINGTON COMMUNITY THEATRE REBUILD PROJECT

Did you know there was a theatre behind the Village Hall and it was home to the Exeter Drama Company for the 8 years? Affectionately know as 'The Shed Theatre' many of you will have come along to plays performed by this popular Drama Company.

Despite  the best efforts of the Community Association and the Exeter Drama Company, the building had to be closed in January 2018 due to the continued deterioration of the sagging asbestos roof, the damp and rotting floors and the side walls that now need underpinning.  It was with a very heavy heart that the building was condemned as unfit for the public and therefore uninsurable.

Beyond repair, it had to be completely demolished and rebuild and we urgently set about raising funds to try and do it as quickly as possible.

There was no way we were going to make The Exeter Drama Company "homeless" and they were offered sole use of space at the Alphington Community Centre but they decided that this temporary home did not suit their needs. They have performed both at the Village Hall and various halls around Exeter and the surrounding villages.  They are currently at home at the 'Cornerstone Hall' in Kimberley Road and are continuing their wonderful programme of plays.

It will be extremely beneficial for the Alphington area to have a proper brick built theatre and the new building will be joined to the Village Hall to make a multi-functional L-shaped community facility. Once open we will be encouraging the development of the arts in Alphington and the surrounding districts, see more performances of the Exeter Drama Company, other drama groups and drama schools.

WE HAVE RAISED AND SPENT £170,000 SO FAR.  THE WALLS ARE UP,  THE ROOF IS ON AND WE WILL NEED A FURTHER £70,000 TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT.
